How to design a bespoke engagement ring — your complete guide

How to design a bespoke engagement ring — your complete guide

There is something extraordinary about wearing a piece of jewellery that exists nowhere else in the world. A ring designed entirely around your taste, your story, and the person you love. That is the promise of bespoke — and it is far more accessible than most people realise.

At Harrogate Jewellers, we guide clients through bespoke commissions every week. Here is everything you need to know before you begin.

What does bespoke actually mean?

Bespoke means made entirely to order — from the initial design concept right through to the finished piece. It is not choosing a ring from a catalogue and resizing it. It is starting with a blank page and creating something that has never existed before.

A bespoke engagement ring can be as simple or as intricate as you like. Some clients come to us with a very specific vision — a particular stone shape, a setting style they've sketched, a family heirloom they want reimagined. Others arrive with nothing more than a feeling and a budget. Both are perfect starting points.

Is bespoke right for you?

Bespoke is a wonderful choice if your partner has very specific taste that isn't easily satisfied by ready-made rings, if you want to incorporate a family stone or heirloom metal, if you're looking for a truly unique piece that no one else will have, or if you simply want the experience of being involved in creating something extraordinary.

It is also worth considering if you've browsed extensively and found rings you almost love — bespoke allows you to take the elements you like and combine them into something that's exactly right.

How long does it take?

At Harrogate Jewellers, most bespoke commissions are completed within four to eight weeks from the point of design approval. The full journey — from initial consultation to finished piece — typically takes six to ten weeks depending on complexity and stone sourcing.

If you have a specific date in mind such as an anniversary or a proposal trip, we always recommend getting in touch as early as possible. Rush commissions are sometimes possible but it's far better to have time on your side.

How much does bespoke cost?

This is the question we're asked most often, and the honest answer is: it varies. At Harrogate Jewellers, bespoke commissions start from £1,500. The final price depends on three main factors — the metal chosen (yellow gold, white gold, rose gold or platinum), the complexity of the design, and the stone selected.

Interestingly, bespoke is not always more expensive than buying a comparable ready-made piece. Because we source stones specifically for each commission rather than holding large stock, clients often achieve excellent value — particularly when choosing a lab-grown diamond as the centrepiece.

We always provide a full written quote before any work begins. There are no hidden costs and no surprises.

What happens at the first appointment?

Your first bespoke consultation at our Harrogate showroom is entirely pressure-free. We'll spend time understanding your vision — showing you examples of previous commissions, discussing stone shapes and setting styles, and getting a feel for the aesthetic you're drawn to.

If you have reference images, sketches or examples saved on your phone, bring them along. If you're starting completely from scratch, that's absolutely fine — part of our job is to help you find the language to describe what you're imagining.

By the end of the first appointment, you'll have a clear picture of the design direction, a realistic budget range, and a timeline. Most clients leave feeling excited rather than overwhelmed — which is exactly how it should feel.
