Choosing an engagement ring is one of the most meaningful decisions you will ever make. And if you're based in Harrogate — or planning to visit — you're in one of the finest towns in England to do it.
At Harrogate Jewellers, we guide couples through this journey every single day. Here is everything you need to know before you begin.
Start with her style
Before you think about diamonds, think about her. Does she wear jewellery that is delicate and understated, or does she gravitate towards bold, statement pieces? Does she prefer warm yellow gold or cool platinum and white gold? Does she live an active lifestyle that might suit a lower, more protective setting?
The answers to these questions will narrow your choices significantly — and make the process far more enjoyable.
Understanding the 4 Cs
Every diamond — natural or lab-grown — is graded on four criteria: cut, colour, clarity and carat weight.
Cut is the most important. A beautifully cut diamond will outshine a poorly cut stone of twice the carat weight. Always prioritise cut above everything else.
Colour is graded from D (completely colourless) to Z (warm yellow). D to F is exceptional. G to I is near-colourless and offers excellent value without any visible difference to the naked eye.
Clarity measures the presence of inclusions — natural characteristics within the diamond. VS1 and VS2 are the sweet spot for most buyers — clean to the naked eye without the premium of flawless grades.
Carat weight is simply the size of the diamond. A well-cut stone always appears larger than a poorly cut one of the same carat weight.
Natural or lab-grown?
This is the question we are asked most often at our Harrogate showroom. Both are real diamonds. Both are certified. Both are beautiful.
A natural diamond carries geological rarity — formed over billions of years beneath the earth's surface, each one entirely unique. A lab-grown diamond offers the same physical and optical properties at significantly better value, allowing you to maximise size and quality within your budget.
Neither choice is wrong. It depends entirely on what matters most to you — and we will always give you our honest guidance without any agenda.
Choosing your setting
The setting is just as important as the stone. A solitaire lets the diamond speak for itself — timeless, elegant and endlessly versatile. A halo surrounds the central stone with smaller diamonds, maximising brilliance and visual size. A trilogy tells a story — past, present and future — with three stones side by side.
Beyond these classics, there are cluster settings, east-west settings, bezel settings and bespoke designs that combine elements from multiple styles into something entirely original.
Book your appointment in Harrogate
The very best way to choose an engagement ring is in person. No screen does a diamond justice — the way a stone catches the light, the way a setting feels on the hand, the way a ring looks when it is worn — these things can only be experienced in a showroom.
At Harrogate Jewellers we offer a relaxed, appointment-first experience at our showroom on 5 Victoria Avenue — just moments from the heart of Harrogate. Our team of fine jewellery experts are here to guide you through every step, with complete honesty and absolutely no pressure.
