How much should you spend on an engagement ring? An honest guide

How much should you spend on an engagement ring? An honest guide

The old rule was two months' salary. The even older rule was three. Neither has any basis in reality — both were invented by diamond marketing campaigns in the 20th century, and neither tells you anything useful about what to actually spend.

At Harrogate Jewellers, we believe in transparency. So here's an honest guide to engagement ring budgets — what different amounts get you, where the best value lies, and how to make the most of whatever you have to spend.

The short answer

There is no right number. The right amount to spend on an engagement ring is whatever feels meaningful to you and comfortable within your broader financial picture. A £1,500 ring chosen with love and care will always be more special than a £5,000 ring bought out of obligation to an imaginary rule.

What different budgets can achieve

At Harrogate Jewellers, we work with clients across a wide range of budgets. Here's an honest picture of what's available at each level:

£1,000–£2,500 — This is a genuinely wonderful budget for an engagement ring, particularly if you're open to lab-grown diamonds. You can achieve a beautiful 1ct+ lab-grown diamond in a classic solitaire or halo setting in yellow gold or white gold. Natural diamonds in this range will be smaller but no less beautiful in the right setting.

£2,500–£5,000 — At this level you have real choice. Excellent natural diamonds in the 0.5–0.75ct range, or stunning lab-grown stones of 1.5ct+, in a wide range of settings and metals including platinum. This is the most popular budget range we see in our showroom.

£5,000–£10,000 — Exceptional natural diamonds, bespoke design options, and the finest metals. At this level the sky is very nearly the limit in terms of design and stone quality.

£10,000+ — Rare stones, significant carats, fully bespoke pieces crafted to exact specification. Our Rarities collection features one-of-a-kind pieces in this range.

Where does the best value lie?

Honestly? The sweet spot for most couples is somewhere in the £2,000–£4,000 range, particularly when you're open to a lab-grown centre stone. The quality and beauty available at this price point today is genuinely remarkable — and far more impressive than the same budget would have achieved even five years ago.

One final thought

The most important thing is that the ring feels right — for her, and for you. If you'd like honest, pressure-free guidance on what's possible within your budget, our team at the Harrogate showroom would love to help. We never upsell and we never judge. Book an appointment and let's find the perfect ring together.
