Lab-grown diamonds: everything you need to know before you buy

Lab-grown diamonds: everything you need to know before you buy

Lab-grown diamonds have transformed the fine jewellery industry — and at Harrogate Jewellers, we're proud to offer both natural and lab-grown stones across our entire engagement and wedding ring collections. But we know questions come up. So here's everything you need to know before you decide.

What exactly is a lab-grown diamond?

A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. It has the same chemical composition, the same physical structure, and the same optical brilliance as a diamond formed deep within the earth over billions of years. The only difference is where it was created. Using either High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) technology, scientists replicate the exact conditions that produce natural diamonds — in weeks rather than millennia.

To the naked eye, and even under a jeweller's loupe, a lab-grown diamond is identical to a mined stone. The only way to tell them apart is with specialist equipment.

Are they certified?

Yes. Every lab-grown diamond we sell at Harrogate Jewellers comes with certification from a recognised grading laboratory — typically the IGI (International Gemological Institute) or GIA (Gemological Institute of America). Just like natural diamonds, they are graded on the 4 Cs: cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. You know exactly what you're buying.

How do they compare on value?

Lab-grown diamonds typically cost significantly less than their natural counterparts of equivalent quality — often 50–70% less for a comparable stone. That means you can choose a larger carat weight, a higher colour grade, or a more intricate setting for the same budget. For many of our clients, the lab-grown route allows them to get the ring they truly want, not a compromise.

Are they a good long-term choice?

This is the question we hear most often in our Harrogate showroom. The honest answer is that lab-grown diamonds are an excellent choice for anyone who prioritises the beauty, durability, and brilliance of a diamond above all else. Natural diamonds, particularly rare or investment-grade stones, hold a different kind of value rooted in their geological rarity. We always encourage our clients to think about what matters most to them — and we're here to help you make that decision without any pressure.

Which should you choose?

There's no universal right answer. Both natural and lab-grown diamonds are stunning, both are certified, and both will last a lifetime. The right choice depends entirely on your priorities, your budget, and your values.

If you'd like to see both side by side and get honest, expert guidance, we'd love to welcome you to our showroom in Harrogate. Book your appointment and we'll help you find the perfect diamond — whatever its origin.
